Upcoming Events 2010 January 12-February 26- The Thompson Family Quilts- Private Collection of Kathlyn Sullivan. After Percy E. Cooke hauled the old trunk out of his mother's packhouse in 1994, he stared in amazement at the fifteen quilts inside. One of nine children,he grew up in circumstances where nothing was ever surplus, wasted, or unused. How could these bedcoverings ever have survived the needs of his large rural Franklin County family? It turns out these quilts, in so many respects salvage art, had been made by his grandmother, great grandmother, and great aunt. The Thompson Family quilts reflect the life and times of a rural African-American family of tenant farmers. Mr. Cooke had the vision of family and history to keep the collection together in hopes of honoring the memories of these hard working, gentle women. March 9-April 30- Eighth Annual Student Art Show- Artwork from students of all Greene County Schools. Each March and April, the Greene County Museum helps to celebrate "Youth Art Month" by hosting a student art show. It showcases the artwork of Greene County's public schools. The artwork of students from Kindergarten through twelfth grade is on display. The exhibit includes paintings, drawings, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and fine crafts. The art teachers at each of the schools begins planning for this exhibit when the school year starts. The show is always a popular exhibition within the community. May 11-May 31- In 1976, the Greene County Improvement Association sponsored the first GCTS-SGHS reunion. This venture sparked an interest in organizing an Alumni Association with the names of the colored high school that since 1925 had provided black Greene County children an education beyond the lementary level. the founders refused to allow this institution that had shaped so many lives to slip into the past. They refused to forget the contributions, the role models, the memories, and the human products of this period of black life in Greene County and thus the GCTS/SC Alumni Annual Reunion was born. The movement became a national alumni association in 1980. June 8-July30 -Art by Susan Fecho- Chair of the Department of Art, barton College, Wilson NC. Recent artwork by Susan Fecho interprets the past as a personal, cultural, and archetypal artifact. The human body, architectural unit, and surrounding landscape became metaphors in her work. trained as a traditional printmaker, she is intrigued by the richness and variety inherent in varied techniques. Storytelling is at the core of her work, with the sculptural book as a mode of telling stories, expressing feelings, and sharing imagery. In her work, there are varied layers of material and mutiple facets of meaning. Fecho holds an advanced degree (M.F.A. 1988) from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. She has shown in 22 solo exhibitions and over a hundred invitationals. Joey Rackley, current director of all performing arts at Greene Central, follows in the steps of other outstanding directors. Nov 9-December 30- David Emory Art Show- North Carolina Artist David Emory began panting a bit later in life than most people. After starting a screen printing business in 1991 with a college buddy, David did a lot of the manual labor while his friend did the majority of the artwork. as the business grew, David bought his partner's interest and that left him with all the art demands of the business. As with anything that one does, the more you work at it the better you become. His illustration skills increased rapidly. David says, "I have found myself drawn to the things that fuel our passions as individuals, whether it be kayaking, music, horseback riding, or anything else. It is the simple recreational pleasures of life, and our relationships with God and friends, that makes our lives special. The direction I have been heading has started to focus on what I would deem as Recreational Americana. Depicting people enjoying the world we live in, or remebering days long past, strikes a deep emotional cord, and that is great to see when somebody lights up upon seeing a painting with which they indentify.
